People from all walks of life including students, representatives from civil society and a few political parties marched on the streets of Kathmandu on Monday to protest against the move to impeach Chief Justice (CJ) Sushila Karki.
The mass rally organised through a social media campaign via Facebook and Twitter marched from Maitighar to Baneshwor and converged into a corner meeting.
A total of 48 different organisations including newly formed Sajha Party and Bibeksheel Nepali Party took part in the rally.
Lawmakers from two major ruling parties—Nepali Congress and the CPN (Maoist Centre)—registered an impeachment motion against incumbent CJ Karki on Sunday citing nine key reasons including interference in the works of the executive (government).
The decision to file impeachment motion against Karki has drawn flak from several quarters, including the ruling Rastriya Prajatantra Party and main opposition CPN-UML.
Talking to the Post, Sajha Party Chief Rabindra Mishra, who was present in the rally, said the registration of impeachment motion is detrimental to the country. He added that the move reeks of conspiracy to foil the upcoming local level elections.
“Such a direct interference by the executive body in the judiciary will have a long-term negative effect for the country,” said Mishra.
Ujwal Thapa President of Bibeksheel Nepali, another political party present in the rally, said the impeachment motion was brought by the government without thinking its consequences.
“Earlier, we had staged demonstration from here seeking to file impeachment motion against Lokman Singh Karki,” said Thapa. “But it is not a good decision to impeach a person like Sushila Karki.”
He said, the Bibeksheel Nepali will continue its protests until the government rectifies its wrong decision. “We will carry out small gatherings in every toles, and make the people aware about this decision,” said Thapa.
